GENERAL MEETING
SUMTER SINGLES
OCTOBER 25, 2008
Vice President, Paul Emberger, called the meeting to order at 3:20pm and announced that it
would be a short business meeting today followed by Sheldon’s Stompers and an ice cream
social. Paul said everyone should have received a blue ticket for the ice cream on the way in
and if they had not, to please see Barbara Maddox for a ticket.
Members stood for the Pledge of Allegiance.
Paul greeted all the members, new and old, and then asked the new members to come to the
front and introduce themselves.
Paul noted that the minutes from the September 28 meeting were posted around the room
and then asked for a motion to accept the minutes. A motion to accept the minutes was made
by Kay McGrath with a second from Julie Ayotte. Minutes were accepted as posted.
Geri Woda gave the Treasurer’s Report showing: A Starting Balance of $5,848.31; Receipts
of $698.00, Disbursements of $1,482.75, and a Current Balance of $5,063.56. Since there
were no additions or corrections, a motion was made by Lyn Dickey, with a second by Gerry
Bergeron, to accept the Treasurer’s Report as read.
Paul announced that a committee was working on changes to the By-Laws and they would be
read today and then read again at the November meeting with a vote following to accept or
reject the proposed changes. Mary Curd then read the By-Law sections as they are presently
written followed by the proposed changes.
Paul asked Gerry Bergeron to give an update on activities.
Bocce is going to start again this Thursday, October 30.
Helen Chun announced that the golf scramble is held on the second Saturday of each month
with lunch following at Palmer’s restaurant. She again asked that people who sign up contact
her if they do not plan to play as we are having too many no-shows and it is not fair to the
other players.
Virginia Dare gave an update on some upcoming trips. The Mt. Dora Holiday Lights Boat Trip
will be held on Saturday, December 20. Dinner will be at the Lakeside Inn at 5:30 pm with the
boat trip following at 8:00 pm.
Kay McGrath discussed the upcoming hike on November 13 to Homosassa. Since Larry
Cohen was out of town, she was not certain if there would be a picnic or if the group would eat
in a restaurant.
Paul then announced a few more upcoming events for the club:
October 31 there will be dinner and dancing at Mallory Hill. Dinner on your own with musical
entertainment provided by Mallory. He suggested that people bring their own chairs, as
Mallory does not allow you to move their chairs around. A prize of free dinner will be awarded
for the best male and female costumes.
November 23, which is our next general meeting, will be a Pot Luck dinner. Each person
should bring a dish to serve 8-12 people based on the letter of their last name: A-D – Pasta
Dish; E-H – Meat Dish; I-N – Dessert; O-T – Salad; and U-Z – Vegetable. Anyone not bringing
a dish will be charged $7.00. This is a BYOB event.
December 7 is the Holiday Dinner/Dance. Tickets are on sale now at $18.00. This event is for
members only, as a portion of this event is being paid for by the Club. Each person attending
is asked to bring an unwrapped gift for the Sumter County Sheriff’s Toys for Tots program.
Tom Perkins discussed the April Cruise to the Caribbean. Booking is through Cruise Planners
and $50/person will be donated to the Heart Association. He announced that there would be
a raffle for two free trips. Someone in the audience asked when the raffle would be held and
Tom replied that it would be held at the February Heart Fling Dinner/Dance.
Paul announced a $73.00 prize for the 50/50 and Tom Flaherty had the winning ticket. The
three bottles of wine went to Geri Pena, Wendy Freyler, and Julie Ayotte.
Carol Tierney asked to address the audience. She mentioned that she had attended some
financial meeting lately, but none of them addressed the needs of single people. She said
one of the firms was willing to hold a focus group to get input from singles as to their needs.
She asked that anyone wishing to volunteer for this focus group sign up with her.
Diane Elliott made a motion to adjourn the meeting, with a second by Barbara Maddox. The
meeting was adjourned at 3:50pm.
Respectfully submitted,
Pam Grant, Secretary
